AkzoNobel – Mechanical Testing Team

AkzoNobel has a vacancy for a Senior Experimentalist in its Research, Development & Innovation organisation, Mechanical Testing Team at Felling, near Newcastle upon Tyne.  Initially some work will be undertaken at the laboratories at Wilton.

The job holder will be educated to degree level or equivalent in physical science or engineering with a background in a materials science related area.  A Masters degree in materials science or polymer mechanics would be advantageous but not essential.

It is essential that they are an experienced experimentalist with a background in mechanical testing.  Experience would preferably have been gained within the coatings industry with a sound knowledge of testing polymer and composite systems.

The responsibilities of the Senior Experimentalist include:

Providing an experimental resource for team based projects.  Planning, and designing experimental work to meet various project targets and deadlines.

  • Exploring alternative and novel experimental techniques. Identify and employ the most appropriate methods to achieve project requirement.
  • Carrying out interpretation and analysis of experimental data, deduce insights and providing recommendations for further work.
  • Explaining and presenting his or her results to the wider team.
  • Developing and improving laboratory equipment and designs, including the evaluation of vendor equipment and liaison with external vendors.
  • Ensuring safety of self and colleagues.
